Anxiety and the Word of God

  Anxiety disorder is on the rise I the millennial generation, but it has also hit hard with my generation. We all probably know one or more people who suffer from anxiety, and we probably have suffered from it as well. Anxiety is a universal experience, in which our world grows increasingly worrisome. This has prompted many modern thinkers to call the last half of the twentieth century the “age of anxiety”.

Psychology and modern medicine provide evidence that worry and anxiety have disastrous effects on the human body ranging from ulcers to chronic feelings of unhappiness. As Christian’s how do we handle anxiety?
In Matthew 6:25-32 the profound words of Jesus’ view of anxiety, his reasonings, and prescription can be found. Furthermore, the Lord states clearly that worry is a complete waste of energy and should not be indulged in because God provides for our needs.
The position of the Lord regarding Anxiety is pretty straightforward. This is what his word states;
* God the Father loves us and is in complete control
* God will meet our needs
* Worry is useless and without effect
Scripture gives us the key: We are buttressed against worry through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will sustain the believer. ( Luke 12:11-12, 2 Timothy 1:7, 1 Peter 5:7)
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33 what we should put in place of worry. Jesus gives us a contingency that tells us the only way to guarantee one’s needs are met is if WE “seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness.”
Jesus tells Martha not to worry about worldly things but focus on the Lord. (Luke 10: 41-42)
The Bible is specific when it comes to handling anxiety. Overcoming anxiety however, is more than just an injunction to stop. Learning to worry less is undergirded by developing a daily walk with God. As it says in Hebrews 13:6 “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
